Christened by binomial nomenclature as Piper Betle is also known as betel plant is a member of Piperaceae family. They are the actual citizens of South East Asia usually residing in India and Sri Lanka.
Living on a aromatic creeper betel leaf owns many vernacular names as it is widely used in many multilingual states. And it is baptized by every regional language.
Possessing a sharp burning taste it contains a phenol which is known as chavicol. Chavicol acts as antiseptic that is highly beneficial on wounds.
There are wide uses of this heart shaped glossy leaves in medicinal history. Named as ‘nagvalli’ by traditional Ayurveda it is recommended best for potpourri of ailments.
Scanty urination:
Being diuretic in nature it is considered as best solution for scanty urination. Betel leaf juice can be amalgamated with dilute milk and some crystals of sugar for taste helps in easing urination.
Headaches:
It is the best remedy whenever you feel that your brain is getting bombarded. Just chewing the leaves can cure the intolerable headaches. Even applying betel leaves juice on forehead will also lower down the pain.
Indigestion:
It is recommended from the ancient times for digestive system. It is believed to be the best solution for indigestion. Just chewing the betel leaf after a heavy dine will make you feel relieved.
Weakness of Nerve:
Whenever you body feels highly exhausted and tired, this tiredness results in nervous exhaustion. Betel leaf is the best solution for nerve pain. You can blend the juice of betel leaves with a teaspoonful of honey, if consumed twice in a day it is one of the amazing tonics.
You can even mix juice of betel leaves with rose petals marmalade, it is also proved as a good tonic.
Respiratory Disorder:
Children usually develop respiratory problems in their childhood itself. Betel leaves cared the pulmonary system of the body. It helps in great ways to the respiratory system.
Get some leaves soaked in warmed mustard oil and apply to the chest. Within few minutes it will relieve cough and ease your breathing.
Constipation:
Many times kids are unable to excrete properly which leads to constipation problem. And kids being very stubborn for medicines it is very difficult to feed them with medicines. But if there are home remedies especially prepared by mothers they will gulp it down.
A medication can be prepared with the stalk of betel leaf. Just dip the stalk of betel leaf in castor oil and induce it in the rectum.
This medication will relieve the child from constipation in just few span of time.
Inflammation:
It is very beneficial when applied on the inflammation like arthritis and orchitis. It is a very popular treatment for arthritis and joint pain in Malaysia.
Wounds and Injuries:
This remedy is used form the traditional times to heal the wounds and injuries.
Extract out the juice of betel leaf and apply it on the wound and wrap it with a betel leaf. Then get it bandaged.
Even tying turmeric with betel leaf will heal the wound tremendously.
Boils:
Nevertheless this herb is amazing on the boils.
You need to gently warm up the leaf till it gets soft then layer it with a coat of castor oil. Spread the oiled leaf all the part which is irritated.
After few hours you need to change this leaf with another leaf.
The boil will burst and all the purulent matter will be drained.
It is not possible to carry out this application in day time so it is better to make it in night and remove it in the morning.
It is just not used as a medicinal purpose but in Asian counties they are relished as good mouth fresheners. Traditional fest and wedding are the occasion where they served very delightedly. Even there is common practice to eat this leaf stuffed with some spices and sliced betel nuts. This is available on the every nook and corner of the street.
