Normally, a woman’s menstrual cycle will last anywhere from 2 days to 7 days. This is the expected norm. The cycle patterns, which vary from woman to woman, will range between 21 to 35 days, depending on the genetic structuring of the woman and her lifestyle.
When there is an occurrence of bleeding that is out of the normal i.e. there is a bleeding in the time between the periods, or there is an absence of the periods for a prolonged period of time; it is called irregular uterine bleeding. Many factors can play havoc for this natural phenomenon; but the most common of these are hormonal imbalance.
CAUSES OF IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION
Listed below are some of the causes that are seen to normally disrupt the normalcy of a menstrual cycle –

Stress plays a major role here. It throws the body off track.
- When young girls experience their first few periods, it may be irregular, until things settle down within their systems.
- A poor diet can cause an obstruction to the regularity of periods. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia also have a role to play.
- Excessive exercising is not good for the body and is known to affect the woman’s menstrual cycle.
- Sexual activity, especially when it is a new occurrence is known to cause disruptions to uterine bleeding.
- Thyroid conditions are another important factor.
AYURVEDA TIPS FOR IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION
In the case of irregular menstruation –
Take a piece of fresh ginger, and grind it. Add this paste to a cup of water, and boil it. Use this concoction thrice in a day, only after meals. Use sugar in case you can’t deal with the taste.- One tsp of saffron should be added to ½ a cup of water. Let the mix boil until it reduces in quantity to equal 1 tbsp. This concentrated mix is then to be divided into 3 parts and consumed with water. Do this thrice in the day, for a couple of days.
In the case of delayed menstruation –
- Half a teaspoon of finely ground cinnamon and 1 cup of milk every night before you hit the bed should do the trick.
- Take around 1 tsp of dried mint leaves, and powder them. Use this powdered form with 1 tsp of honey, thrice in a day!
In the case of heavy bleeding
- Make a paste out of beal leaves, by grinding them together. Add this to one tsp of warm water, and soon after down it with some cold water.
- Use around 1 tsp of coriander seeds in 2 cups of water, and boil them together until the volume is reduced to that of one cup. Have this mixture when it is lukewarm. Add sugar if needed. It is to be taken twice in a day.
